As per a leaked letter available in various online forums, the distributor of the Malayalam version of the Tamil film Varisu has written to actor Vijay, requesting his intervention to recover losses incurred due to the film’s poor performance at the box office.
In a letter dated July 13, 2023, distributor Roy said that he is owed a commission of Rs. 3.6 crore by the film’s producer, Dilraju Productions. He said that he has only received Rs. 16 lakh so far, and has been unable to get the remaining amount despite repeated requests.
Roy said that he has been in the film distribution business for three generations, and that this is the first time he has faced such a situation. He said that he is “very upset” and “wandering for months” asking for the refund.
He appealed to Vijay to intervene and help him recover his losses. He said that Vijay is a “hero” and that his words will carry weight with the producers. He also said that Vijay can return the money by deducting it from his salary.
Vijay has not yet responded to the letter.
The film Varisu was released in theaters on March 11, 2023. It was directed by Vamshi Paidipally and starred Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles. The film was a commercial failure, grossing only Rs. 6.83 crore in Kerala.
The film’s poor performance has put the distributor in a difficult financial situation. He is now hoping that Vijay will help him recover his losses.
It remains to be seen whether Vijay will intervene in the matter. However, his response to the letter will be closely watched by the film industry.
